BMS Safety Training

We started selling industry safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) in Kuching, Sarawak in 1994, the year when Malaysian OSH Act 1994 was gazetted.

Right from the very begining, we provided free product trainings to all our customers when we delivered them their orders. We are very happy to do so in view of the generally very low level of knowledge in occupational safety (and Health) in the local industries.  To ensure that workers know how to use critical equipment like respirators or breathing apparatus in the critical environment, we insisted that the workers (users) must be trained before we would deliver them the equipment.

Product training helped but foundamental safety awareness and knowledge in safety and health management in the local industries remained very low especially in the small and medium size industrial establishments who did not have the economic scales and financial resources to go for full compliance. We then enhanced our product training by adding some relevant safety awareness content.  These were the most basis things they needed to know to ensure correct technique and attitude in using PPE and safety equipment.  Do you believe that we actually found worker wearing facemask and respirator upside down.  We asked them why wearing that way and they answered this way we breathed easier.  We also found worker in chlorine room wearing respirator fitted with ammonia cartridges and even professional people wearing facemask inside out during a demo service when the country was threatened by flu virus. We couldn't blame them because no one has ever trained them how to use them. It was dangerous because they though they were protected but in fact they were not.

Even with free product training, we realized that what our customers have learnt from us is only a small part of the picture they should know.  I believe that most, if not all, of our customers do not write their own safety programs.  Those who do have somekind of safety programs however do not use them because they do not know how.  The programs they have are most likely written by consultants when the factory was built long time ago.  Some have copies of programs passed to them from the HQ.  How relevant are these programs to their operations is indeed a question.  We realized that the key to uplift their safety standard is to train them first the ABC of safety (the safety awareness, legal compliance, attitude etc). They can then add on the building blocks (the relevant safety programs) to build their safety organization. We strongly believed that they must write their own safety programs (or to expand their standard operating procedure to include these programs). The best safety program is one that is written by those working at the  lowest level if he/she know how to write and trained to do so. Our safety programs training includes training on writing their own safety programs.

A typical (standard) safety program includes the identification of hazards, assessment of risks, hierachy of controls, selection of PPE, training and re-training, maintenace of records and so on. Some good examples of safety programs are:

  • Hearing Conservation Program for hearing protection in noisy environment
  • Respiratory Protection Program for handling toxic chemicals
  • Confined Space Safety Program for confined space entry and work

We are keen to help the industries to lay their safety foundation and to build their safety organization by training them to write their own relevant safety programs.  Do feel free to discuss with us your training needs and contact us for a briefing on our training program. You may find form us something you need.

One of our costomers called me one day telling me that he has just completed a noisy survey report to comply DOSH's (Department of Safety and Health, the enforcement agency of our OSH Act 1994) instruction.  He engaged a competent person to do noise survey on his factory.  He...

Companys send their employees to attending training courses because they want to see changes in the employees and in the ways they work.  We train to make change and we re-visit our customers after the training, if allowed, to interview the attendants who have "sucessfully" completed the...
